Angela’s cab pulled into the airport parking lot. She looked up as it headed to the white and red zones in front of the buildings doors.  Realizing that they were close, she threw the Rubik’s cube that she was working on in her purse and pulled out her passport and ticket to China. She had wished that her husband Gabriel could have made the trip with her.  “He always wanted to go to China as well as Japan during  their time of lively cultural change.”She thought to herself.

This trip was on their bucket list unfortunately a horrific accident took him from her too soon.  That day was a dark day for her and she will always remember that day as her Black Tuesday.  Yet she knew that this is something that he would want her to do.

It was early in the morning when she entered the airport. There was calmness within. The one thing she always loved about the smaller airports was their sense of peacefulness.  It always gave her time to reflect on life as she waited in line.  Angela remembered back when Gabriel asked her why she loved these types of airports. “Gives you the perfect clarity of vision” was her response.

Oh how she missed him.  They loved to travel together and she remembered the one time their song  played in the waiting area and he asked her to dance.

She was snapped back to reality when a young boy started to cry.  “Mommy I want a pop” he hollered as he threw to the floor an unopened milk carton.

“Sweetie, you have to drink your milk. It is too early in the morning to have a pop.” A young blond quietly and calmly spoke to him.

“But I want a pop” He hollered louder.

Angela felt sorry for the young mother, she looked stressed and tired, so she walked over to her.  Bent down and picked up the carton of milk.

“Hello, what is your name?” she asked the young boy as she handed him the milk.

His face twisted with disgust and said “Tommy and I do not want that.”

Angela pulled out the Rubik’s Cube from her purse, “Would you like to play with this while you drink your milk?”

His face started to brighten up as he reached for the cube.  “Oh no, you must sit down and drink your milk while you play with this”

He ran over to a chair, sat down and took his milk as well as the cube from Angela.

“Thank you so much.” The young woman whispered, “He really needs to get more calcium in his diet.”

“You are very welcome.” Angela continued with a smile, “He will play with that for awhile, just sit back and relax. I can tell you have had a hard morning”

“Oh it was a rough night, his father just had to watch Hockey Night in Canada with him so he was up late and then we had to get up early to get catch our flight”  her voice trailed off as she looked over at Tommy.  If he wasn’t with me and it was later in the afternoon I would have probably had an alcohol beverage. Flying makes me nervous enough but flying alone with him makes it harder for me.”

Angela grabbed her hand.  “Tommy can keep the cube and know that you are not alone many us feel the same way about flying but you know the saying ‘You are safer in the air then on the ground’.  Just take a few deep breaths and here something for you to read on the plane. “

She pulls out a puzzle magazine out of her purse, “This will keep you busy as well.”

“Flight 97 to China is loading on gate 3” A man’s cut out the music over the loudspeaker.

“Well that is me.  It was nice to meet you and Tommy.  Have a great flight and cherish these moments because time flies by quickly”

The young woman reached out and gave her a hug.  Angela looked over to Tommy and gave him a wave but he was intensely concentrating on the cube as he sipped his milk.

Spinning on her heals she headed to gate 3.
